KE^XHRLS' COLLEGE
FOUNDATION-STONE LAID
(From Our Own Correspondent.) -....'...; ...NELSON, 12th August. The foundation stone of the new Girls' College building waa laid yesterday afternoon by the Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Education. The wing now under course of construction will form the nucleus of the main building. It is situated to tho east of the present structure, and faces north. Beinforced concrete is boing used in its construction, and every precaution has been taken to make it earthquake resisting. Mr. Atmore said the next section would be started early next year. Now Zealand, instead of leading the world in the matter of education, waa now lagging behind, and to-day a great many countries were showing more progress than New Zealand was. As member for Nelson ho was proud to lead in the great educational movement which would result in giving every boy and gir.,l an education superior to that being given in any other country. The Minister., went on to reply to criticism of ."the Education Beport. He said that not a single objection which had been raised to tho report had been based on anything in the report itself. He would say to the college governors that without unification of control the Technical School, which in other places was the greatest rival of colleges and grammar schools, would be developed in; Nelson. There was only room for one. His suggestion was that the proper place for the Technical School was in ;the college ground itself. It was either unification of control or a technical school in stronger competition with- the colleges. There was absolutely no foundation for the assertion that, staffs of sclnaols would be ed without consultation with the headmasters. .'■■'•':"'■.'■ „ '' Mr. Fletcher, of the Fletcher Construction Colpipany, Wellington, contractors for the budding, presented the Minister -with,a .gold trowel as a memento of the; occasion. At yest'ofday,'s. meeting of the Cawthroii Institute-Trust Board, feeling reference was made by the chairman, Mr. W. J. Moft'att;:to the death of the late Mrs. Maria Wright, Blister of the founder of tho Cawthrbn Institute; also to tho death of Mr. Alfred Philpott, formerly Beseareh Scholar at the Cawthron Institute. Letters: of sympathy are to be sent to the relatives of the late Mrs. Wright and to Mrs. Philpott.
