WILHELM BACKHAUS
■♦— To-morrow. night, at the Town Hall, Wilhelm Backhaus will give the first or his two return concerts in Wellington, and the E. J. Gravestock management stresses the fact that these two recitals will be the last opportunities of hearing the world-famous artist, prior to his departure for Australia and Europe. Two very delightful programmes. have been _ prepared, and included in to-morrow's items are numbers by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, as well as a group of Debussy's works. . As usual, there will be two of Beethoven's sonatas, and the ones selected for this occasion are opus 13 in C minor ("Pathetique"), and opus 53 in G major ('.'Waldstein"). The beautiful Rhapsody in G minor will be the Brahms work, and in the Chopin group will consist of the Fantasie Impromptu, Impromptu.in ,F sharp major, and three studies from opus 25.' Five jf Debussy's best-knoira compositions—Dun Cahier d'Esquisses, La Fille aus cheveux de lin. La Cathedrale engloutie, Minstrels, and Jardins sous lapluie—will form an interesting group, for Debussy is one of the few modern composers whom Mr. Backliaus includes in his repertoire. Waldesrauschen and the ever-poplar La Campanella will complete the programme. The box plan and day sales are at The Bristol, and there is every indication of a large audience at both to-morrow's and Saturday's concerts.
