CHAMPIONSHIPS AWARDED
FINALS-IN LOWER GRADES
The 1930 club Rugby season so far as Wellington is concerned is now drawing to a close, and the Management Committee of the local union, at its weekly meeting last night, over which Mr. J. Prendeville presided, gave consideration to the dates on which the lower 'grade championships will definitely conclude.
A formal motion was passed declaring the senior A and B championships closed, the titles being awarded to Petone and Wellington respectively. The clubs concerned were congratulated on their pert'orman.ces. The fifth grade competition was' also declared closed mid; awarded .to Petone. subject to the .ages of the.players being approved; ' Considerable discussion arose out of a recommendation.from the Junior Advisory Committee that, except, in a few instances where the games had a bearing on.the championships, the-.games set down for this Saturday be not :pkyed..' Mr. G. -F~ Jackson, explained that the committee had made-'the-recommendation as it was thought that several clubs would be defaulting through the players having lost interest. ''';',,■. Mr. H. D. .Morgan remarked that many of the lower grade players had come to regard the. -season as closed because the senior finals had been played, and another Saturday/taken up with the Test match. Mr. A. Griffiths considered it was too early' for the season to be declared closed, and many of the players would like to continue playing, as long ns possible. His remarks were'supported by -Major J.. .).' King, and the ..chairman; Mr. J. Prendeville° said that he did not like disagreeing with the "committee's recommendation; but that he thought that'even'if the championship were' not affected, this- week's games should be played. It was too soon for the season to;be declared closed_ on 2nd August, and if the union provided the opportunity of playing this week, the responsibility then rested with the players. It was decided that all the lower grade matches will be.played this week, after which the junior, intermediate, and fifth grades will be declared closed. If necessary, Petone and Marist will later play off for the third grade; and in the; fourth grade Technical Old Boys will subsequently play the extra game, which will place them on level terms wjth Petone in the matter of games played and which, if won or drawn, will give them the championship. The Wellington-Athletic match on Saturday will probably . decide the sixth grade result. The eligibility of a member of the Petone team in this grade is at present under consideration, and the report from the club will be considered before the championship is awarded. The seventh and eighth, grade matches will be continued this weeki ' HOUSE MATCHES APPROVED. Permission was given "for the playing of the following ■ matches:. . Johnsonville Juniors v.
