FLAX POSITION CRITICAL
Ordinarily flax mills in the Manawu.Ui are opening for .the season at this time of the'year: ' Practically none are working at the moment, and they do not appear to be preparing to resume. The fibre, it is stated, by millers, cannot be manufactured, even to pay bare costs,, of production, at under £25 per ton average. But the market to-day is no better than £19 per; ton average, and is probably less than £18 per ton for high failgrade. A private cablegram was received in Wellington yesterday to the effect that the International Harvester Company of the United States, makers of binder twine, had bought 2200 bales of Mexican sisal at the equivalent of £20 per ton f.o.b. Mexican port of shipment for delivery August to June. The freight on this fibre from Mexico to the United States point of delivery would be under £2 per ton. '■'''■
