WAGG, HUTT CHAMPION
COLLINS CRASHES
Dull, showery weather prevented a large attendance for the final day of the Hutt Golf Club's tourney yesterday, but quite a number of visitors spent the clay in the closing competitions. Rana Wagg, who has held the club's title for two years in succession, won the Hutt Winter Cup, held last year by H. P. Dale, of Eltham. U. C. Collins (Masterton), after fighting his way to the final and showing some excellent golf, crashed badly. He was unfortunate in having the wheel of his car come off while on the way over the Rimutakas yesterday morning, and he had to leave Mrs. Collins with the brokendown ear, or miss his chance of playing in the semi-finals. The accumulated strain probably put him off his game in the afternoon. THE SEMI-FINALS. D. C. Collins beat D. O. V/hyte, 3 and 2. Rana Wagg beat M. Duncan, 1 up. Wagg won the first in 4, and halved the next three in 5, 4, 5. Duncan took the next two in nice 4's, and stood 1 up. Wagg holed a niblick cbip at the seventh for 3, and the game was squared. Wagg took three putts on the eighth and yet halved, and, halving t1 short waterhole in 3, they turned all square. Wagg put his tee shot into the water at the tenth, which Duncan took in a nice f Taking the next in 4>.Duncan was~"2 up. Wagg won the next, however. Tho next two were halved. At the fifteenth Duncan found the long rough with his second, and Wagg took the hole in 5-6, squaring the match. At the sixteenth both found bunkers on opposite sides of the green, but Wagg played a beautiful shot out to within less than two feet of the pin, and, taking the hole in 3, was in the lead for the first time since the start of the match. The last two were halved in s's, Wagg winning 1 up. Collins won the first and second in 5. The next two were halved. Whyte "won the fifth in 3 with a long putt. The sixth was halved in s's. Collins won the seventh in 4, and Whyte the eighth in 4, sinking a long putt. Collins retaliated with a long putt for 2 at the waterhole, and Whyte turned 2 down. Whyte won the tenth in 4. The next was halved. Collins took the twelfth in 3, and the thirteenth in 5, making him 3 up. The next three were halved. THE FINAL. The small gallery went out expecting a close match between Collins and Wagg, but from the first it was evident that the Wairarapa player was completely, off his game. He put his first ball out of bounds. This is easy at the first hole, but when he made a weak approach with his third, he gave away his chances. Wagg overran his approach and was weak with the return, but took the hole in 5-6. Wagg had a bad stance for his second at the next, which was halved in s's. Both found bunkers at the iron-shot third1, Collins on tho right and Wagg on the left. Wagg laid his ball out of the bunker almost dead, but Collins failed to get out at the first attempt, then overran the green into the other bunker, failed to get out of that, and conceded the hole, making Wagg 2 up. Wage's second at the fourth was within easy putting distance, while Collins's was away to the left of the green, and Wagg was 3 up. Both found the bunker to the right at the fifth. Collins was short getting out, and Wagg's ball hit the bank and just scraped over. Both made "good approach putts, but Wagg missed a two-footer, Collins taking the hole 5-6 (Wagg 2 up). Neither played a good second at the sixth, Wagg half-top-ping his shot and Collins getting under hia ball. The hole was halved in s's, Wagg's ball hitting the hole and turning away. At the seventh Collins was on in 2, while Wagg was away to the left, but Wagg's beautiful pitch laid him handy. Collins's approach putt was too strong. Wagg's putt did not go down, and stymied Collins, who knocked him in for a 4. (Wagg 3 up.) Both were on the tricky eighth in 2, Wagg took three putts to Collins's four, and was 4 up. Collins put his mashie shot into the lake at the short ninth, and put his drive into.the bog at the tenth, taking two to' get barely out, and Wagg was 6 up. The eleventh was halved in s's. Wagg was within.seven feet of the pin with his second at the twelfth, and after taking two putts Collins conceded the hole, Wagg winning 7 and 6. GROUP FINALS.
