The Matai was launched at Hebbura* on-Tyne on 11th July by Sir Thomatf and Lady Wilford, and her bmldersjj Messrs. Hawthorn, Leslie, and Co., Ltd.,are responsible for her'delivery in .Not*; Zealand.
The vessel is being brought - out byj Captain Manning who, in the cotirse'ol; his lengthy career, has delivered about GO new vessels to all parts of the world.He is 74 years of age, and first'visited) New Zealand as a lad of 17 on tße fullrigged ship Sanspariel. For. 25 yearrf he-,served as a master with the General Steam Navigation Co., of London, an<l then temporarily retired from the sea* While on a visit to London he was induced1 to take a new vessel : out to; Savannah, and that trip marked ...thfl! oponing of a new lease of sea life. Towards the end of last year he brought^ out the Otago Harbour Board's; new; dredge Otakou, and there were inanyj thrilling moments in the voyage of 94 days, the vessel at ono stagei; running short of fuel. The Matai has been constructed toj burn either oil or coal, but it is understood that she is burning oil on hee maiden trip, and she will.continue ttt] burn oil fuel while in the lighthotis«j service. • * ' s . .".'-■
