THREE MEN IMPRISONED
Thefts from .motor-cars parked in the city last week resulted in the appearance of four men before Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court •. to-day. Their names were Victor Hugh King, aged 40, and Joseph Eric Cornish, aged IS, Marcus Leach, aged 23, and Duncan Morton Cameron, aged 32. In the case of King and Cornish, who pleaded guilty to stealing two suitcases and their contents, of a total value of £19 ss, the property of Reginald Chapman, Detective-Sergeant Holmes said that the complainant parked his motor-car in Lower Taranaki street about 12.45 p.m. on Friday. When he returned at 2.30 p.m. he found that two suitcases he had left in the car were missing. Later Cornish was found selling a suit from one of the cases, and ho was also present when King sold another suit. "I think the Borstal is the best place for him," said the Probation Officer (Mr. T. P. Mills), referring to Cornish. The Magistrate (to Cornish): "There seems to be only one way_ of preventing becoming an habitual thief, and 'that is to give you two years in a Borstal institution. That is. my sen-j tonce." . King, who has a list ot previous convictions, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. ■ DOCTOR'S BAG- TAKEN. A brief bag containing surgical instruments of a total value of £o and belonging to Dr. W. 13. Robertson was taken by Leach' nnd Cameron from the doctor's ear while it was parked outside the Bowcn street, hospital. The accused, said Detective-Sergeant Holmes, were afterwards found trying to sell the bag to a second-hand denier. Somo of the instruments were missing, and tho accused explained this by saying they had thrown them into the harbour. The value of tho missing instruments was about £3. , ".Seeing it is your first offence and you will probably bo sentenced-on another charge, I will admit you to probation for two years," the Magistrate told Leach. "Cameron, you'ro an old offender, and you will bo sentenced to four months' imprisonment." On a charge of stealing a suit valued at £5, tho property of James Ford, Leach and Cameron were remanded- to appear at. Tamil aru nil i to-morrow. Leach pleaded .guilty and Cameron not guilty.
