INCREASED "TOTE "TAX
POSSIBLE EFFECTS
DROP IN REVENUE
(By Telegiaph.—Press Association.) j AUCKLAND, This Day. Referring to tho increased totalisator tax at tho annual meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, Sir Edwin JMiteholson said that it was at present impossible to gauge tho result. The increase would primarily .fall, on investors, but it probably would decrease the turnover on the machine, causing a decreased revenue which would most certainly bring lower prizo money. A reduced attendance must also be looked for, as well as smaller fields, and the subsequent drop in revenue would probably involve many clubs, particularly the smaller ones, in great loss. A further serious consequenco would be the tendency to increase betting with bookmakers. If the Dominion was to pay its way, increased taxation would be necessary, but great care should be exercised to save the geese that laid the- golden eggs.
