AUCKLAND NOTES

NEW HORSES AT ELLERSLIE

The three-year-old Karaugapai, who has been spelling for. some weeks, has rejoined J. Chisholm-s active brigade at Ellerslie. Karangapai ran several good races in juvenile handicaps in the autumn, and he should be a good proposition in hack company this season.

Two newcomers to Ellerslie are a couple of two-year-old fillies who have gone into N. Cunningham's stable. One is a chestnut from Lady' Ridicule, and the other a bay out of The Sapling. They are both reported to be racy-looking youngsters

Mr. C. M. Emanuel's sprinter Royal Tea, who recently underwent an operation for respiratory trouble, is once again included in the active brigade at Ellerslie. Royal Tea is in splendid order to go ahead with a preparation, and, although it is too early to tell yet, it is hoped the results'of his operation will prove successful.

The two-year-old Speedfast (Musketoon —Picture) has recovered from a cold which kept him idle for a few weeks, and he is again working under W. Ryan. Speedfast is on the small side, but he has improved considerably in appearance since coming to Ellerslie.

Mrs. W. D. Graham, of New Plymouth, lias purchased the. two-year-old gelding Easter Tide, by Illumination—Gamboling, from Mrs. V. E. Riekit, of Cambridge Easter Tide is a half-sister, to Helium.

Imperial Prince has resumed work again at Ellerslie under J. M. Buchanan's care. Last season the son of Lucullus displayed • promising form, particularly when he scored in the Ferguson Handicap, one mile, at Ellerslie, last December, beating, among others, two good ones in Richfield and Greenaway. He appeared to lose form during the autumn, no doubt owing to the fact that he was growing very fast, and he should do much better this season.

Hannibal, who claims an engagement in the Jellicoe Handicap, continues to make good progress under F. Weston's care, but so far he has not been asked to do any fast work. The Catmint gelding is not a .very robust sort, but he appears to be thriving well on the work allotted him, and should be an improved galloper this season.

The Auckland sprinter Lady's Boy has improved in condition, and looks much better as the result of having an easy time since he returned from Trentham. When at his best the Some Boy II gelding is a speedy galloper, and only requires to strike his best form again to be hard to beat in sprint races. He is due to make his first appearance this season in the Duuedin Handicap at the Pakuranga Meeting.

Royal Gallant, the Australian-bred two-year-old by Top Gallant from Princess Ilona, hit out very freely over a few furlongs on the course proper earlier in the week. This youngster has a vice style of galloping, and is likely to improve when he has had more experience.

Since going to Ellerslie Llanore has not been overtaxed, with the result that she has now freshened up considerably. This mare won a double —the Opunake Cup and St. Patrick's Handicap—at the Opunake Meeting last March, but has nothing to her credit since. Llanore is a useful sort,, who should do well around the country circuit this season.
