PASTURE RESEARCH

VALUABLE INFORMATION

Tho results of a recent investigation by Mr. T. Bigg and Mr. H. A. Askew, of the eawthron' Institute, Nelson, on the influence of season and fertilisers on tho yield and composition of a typical dairying pasture have just been made public through the medium of a bulletin published by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

In the investigations a study has been made of the effect of season and fertilisers on.the yield of a typical dairying pasture at' Eichmpnd, Nelson. The pasture has been down for many years, and prior to the commencement of the experiments in the spring of 1923 little mammal treatment had been given. The. pasture, however, was noted for its good production in months of normal rainfall, and at that time maintained comfortably a cow to the acre during the period commencing at the beginning of October and ending early in April. The soil on which the pasture is located is a light gravelly loam, well supplied with humus. Tho investigations dealt ,with both hay, aftermath crops, and with pasture grass frequently mown, so as to correspond with a system of rotational grazing. In addition to a detailed study of the effect of season and fertiliser on pasture production when- frequently mown, it has been possible to compare the production of pasture as hay. and aftermath crops under. similar manurial | treatment to the areas mown regularly. The first section of' the investigation dealt with the effect of manurial treatment on the. hay crop. The results of the experiments show that over a period of six years' great response . has been obtained from both nitrogenous and potassic manures. All the data obtained have been carefully tabulated and analysed by the investigators, and the bulletin is an important addition to tho literature-on the subject of pastures. " The information given on the points considered will bo of the-greatest value to the farmer of New Zealand and.'of other countries.
