MEETING TARIFF DEMAND

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Bth August. Following the increase in the petrol tax, four of the principal taxi companies in Auckland have decided upon a new scale of fares which, while placing them all on the samo footing in meeting tho new tariff demands, will also eliminate rate-cutting.

The new scale provides for an increase of 6d in the charges for the 'fourth and fifth miles, and it will take effect immediately.

The companies concerned arj the Checker Taxieab Company, Ltd., Chess Taxicabs, Ltd., Black and White Cabs, Ltd., and Ked Top Cabs, Ltd. The amended scale adopted by the four companies is as follows:—One mile, Is; two miles, 2s; three miles, 2s 6d; four miles, 3s. There will be the usual charge of 6d extra for each additional half-mile over five miles.
