WEATHER IMPROVING
The centre of the cyclone responsible for the present wet and dismal weather crossed Cook Strait last evening, and was this morning in the neighbourhood of tho Chathams, where, at 9 a.m. today, a reading as low as 25.90 inches was recorded by the barometer. Pressure is now rising over tho Dominion as a whole, but it still has a long way to go Before normal level is reached. Dull mi misty, wqnther wfth general
rain has been reported from nearly all parts of the Dominion, and the rainfall has been heavy in irlaces. Although winds of galo force have been experienced on the East Coast of the South Island, tho wind force as a whole has been less than might have been expected from the intensity of the cyclone. Westerly winds have prevailed over the North Island, and southerli.es have ruled in the South Island. Auckland had a westerly wind yesterday, with changeablo weather and occasional showers. In Wellington fog was in evidence in tho early morning. The day was dull, and light misty rain fell at intervals. There was very little wind, as Wellington was about in the centre of tho disturbance, and the total rainfall amounted to 27 points. During tho night the wind freshened somewhat. Christchurch has had nearly continuous rain, 160 points being rocorded for tho 24 hours ending at 9 a.m. to-day. A strong south-west wind reached gale force last night, and tho rain came down more heavily. Dunedin also had continuous rain, with a light to moderate south-easterly wi>.id. With flic departure of tho cjdlone, a gradual improvement in the weather may bo looked for in most districts. In I tho meantime, however, generally | moderate to strong south-westerly or southerly winds may be expected to reach gale force in places. Although flue in Westland, elsewhere the weather will continue to be unsettled, cold, and showery, pending a gradual improvement.
