PRICE OF LOYALTY
HUSH IN THE HOUSE
CAPTAIN RUSHWORTH
QUESTIONED
A hush fell in the House of Representatives last night when Captain* BushworUi (Country Party, Bay of Islands) was questioned by Mr. Speaker as to the meaning o£ a remark made by him. in reference to Mr. C H. Clinkard (United,. Kotorua). "The member for Kotorua," said Captain H. M. Rush worth, "took th» member for Grey Lynn to task for not being loyal to his party, and by inference- held himself npias a model." A Labour member: "Are you loyal to your party?" Ca.ptain Bush worth: "I am, and I ami loyal to my pledges. How would the member for Kotorua like it if I suggested to Mm that he had his price?'* Mr. Clinkard: "A *very improper: suggestion." "Yes," replied Captain Eushworthj "but the member for Botorua is keenly; interested in the subject of timber, and it would not be unreasonable for any-. one to suggest to him that ho had a consideration for his loyalty. ". A Government member: "That la unfair." Mr. Clinkard: "Is that allowable, Mr. Speaker?" Mr. Speaker: "Will the honourably gentleman explain what he means?" "I suggest," said Captain Kush« worth, "that he was able to persuada the Government to put additional pro* tectioii on timber." Mr. Speaker: "Did the honourable member refer to the member for Kotorua's own private business?" Captain Bushworth: "No, I don'fc know Ms private business, but I know he is keenly interested in timber. He has been an advocate of increased; duties on timber ever since I hava, known him." Mr. P. Frascr (Labour, ■Wellington Central): "So have other members." Captain Kuslnvorth: "Yes, but thai member for Kotorua was able to persuade the Government to substantially, increase the duties. I suggest that i£ the member for Grey Lynn had. bee* able to persuade the Government ttf deal with his pest hobby to the same satisfactory extent, he might have been, just as loyal as the member fo* Rotorua." Mr. Speaker: "Do you suggest tbajf. the member for Botorua is likely ti, make any private gain?" Captain Bushworth: "No, sir. Ther« was no such suggestion in my mind. I was referring entirely to his political dealings."
