(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, sth August. Tho long spell of dry weather was bro ken yesterday morning when heavy rain fell in all parts of the district. Although the change in the weather was welcomed by farmers and those people who rely on tanks for their domestic supply, "Spud" Monday holiday programmes were affected (the first Monday in August is a public holiday here). During the morning .37 of an inch was registered. To-day it is fine again. In spite of the rain the ladies' and boys' six-a-side hockey tournaments were played Tho Rewa A team, consisting of Misses M Berryman, H. Page, M. Stewart, E. Page, M Weldon, and M. Russell, defeated Ri waka in the final. The boys' competition was won by the Stoke School team, which played off with the Hampden Street School The Greig.Cup for a ladies' relay race was won by the Rewa Club. The team was: Misses H. Murray, M. Berryman, H. Page, and E. Page. The ground at Trafalgar Park was slippery for the Rugby football match between the combined Nelson-Marlborough Bays team to play the Englishmen and the Best of Nelson. The combined team handled the greasy ball surprisingly well and mainly as a result of splendid combined back movements, won by 36 points to 3. Fowler and Alexander, the half and first five-eighths respectively, were outstanding Mr. A. Kempthorne, of the Eastern Extension Cable Company, returned to New Zealand by the. Corinthic. He has been for some time in Australia, including Port Darwin, where he spent the last two years, and returned to New Zealand at the conclusion of a journey round the world. Mr. Kempthorne, who is a son of Archdeacon and Mrs. Kempthorne, is on a visit to Nelson. Mr. E. Douglas Tayler, F.R.C.0.. A.R.C.M., Director of Musical Education, is visiting Nelson in connection with the Musical Festival, and is staying at Wainui House. _ George Richards, of Tahuna, was admitted to the Nelson Public Hospital last evening suffering an injured foot, the result of being knocked off his motor-cycle at tho intersection of Bridge and Trafalgar streets by a car driven by Maurice Maxwell, also a resident of Tahuna. Ashley Thomas Thomason, aged 25 years, a .brewery hand, was charged at the Magistrate's Court this morning beforp Mr. T. E. Maunsell, S.M., with the theft of £3 15s in money, the property of Colin Henry Greiner. He was also charged with the theft, on the same day, of tobacco and cigarettes of different kinds, to the total value of ss, the property of some persons unknown. Detective Sinclair explained that the arrest of ThomasoD was the result of an epidemic of thieving from differ ent football field dressing sheds. When in terviewed accused frankly admitted the thefts on the day stated. There was no evidence to prove that the accused had been responsible for other thefts. "Counsel for Thomason submitted that the accused was a young man with two children. As the result of an unsuccessful contract several years ago lie was in debt, against which he had been struggling." • The Magistrate said he would stretch a point on this occasion, but if others ventured to try their luck and were found out they could take it for granted that they would get a substantial term of imprisonment. Probation was granted on the first charge, the term being fixed at twelve months, conditional on restitution. On the other charge a fine of £2 was inflicted. , .
