FRENCH CLUB
The Cercle Franeais met last week in tho reception hall of the Pioneer. Club. The programmo was in charge of Miss AI P Young. Piano numbers were played by Miss Lalla Vondersloot ("La klle au Jardin" by Mornpou, and "Pantomime," by Do Falla). Mr. Norman Byrne sang "Menuet d'Exandet" and ".Jcuno Fillette" (Weckerlin). Songs were also contributed by Miss Nora Gray ("Romance," by Debussy, and ''Chanson Indoue," by Bimsky Korsakoff.) "Apollon etles Muses," a monologue, by F. M. Bouillet, was brightly given by Miss ?oung. The second part of the evening was occupied by an interesting drama, 'fLe Poignard'Malais." This drama, founded upon a novel by Tristan Bernard, has been presented with great success at the Theatre dv Grand Guignol. The characters were well filled by Misses Edith Hind and M. P. Young, and. Mrs. Finlayson, Prof. Boyd Wilson, Messrs. W. W. Mason, F. F. Miles, and B. J. Elliott. Miss Young.stage-managed .the play, and must have been highly gratified by the success of her efforts. Madame do Filippi directed tho conversation circle, and Miss Young received. Before introducing tho play Mr. Miles announced .that a presentation \v;is to be made to Miss Young, who was about to leave New Zealand to reside in Italy. She had been an active member of the committee for ' some years, 'and her departure would be a Kovcve loss to the club. A bouciret and hatbox and a greenstone and ' silver fruit knife and a jar made of New Zealand woods were handed to Miss Young. It was announced that Mrs. T. B. Herd would give tho first of a course of lectures on French literature on Thursday in' the 'library, tho foe for this course is included in the yearly subscription. "
