COLD CHANGE COMING
A deep and extensive cyclone' now covers the whole'of the Dominion and the surrounding seas. Since yesterdayit has developed two centres, these being located at 9 a.m. to-day east and woat of Cook Strait. Winds, therefore, over the central districts have been variable and of. little force. In the north, however, strong westerlies to south-westerlies have prevailed, and in the south strong southerlies have been the rule. Eain has been, and is still, genera^ falls in many places in the North Island and on the East Coast of the South Island being heavy. - Although snow has been, reported from a few South Island stations, temperatures as a whole have been mild, and the rain will be beneficial. The heaviest falls have been recorded at Farewell Spit (134 points), Castlopoint (126 points), Christchurch (139 points), and Cape Palliser (74 points). Wellington had 62 points up to 9 a.m. this morning, and shared with the other chief centres generally dull, unsettled, and wet weather.. Westerly winds over the North Island aro forecasted to back shortly to the south. Elsewhere south-easterly or southerly winds will prevail, and winds generally will increase in strength and reach gale force in places. The weather is likely to continue dull and misty and unsettled. Further general rain is probable, falls being heavy in the North Island. Some snow is likely and temperatures will become very cold. An improvement, howovor, is likely to set in on the West Coast of the South Island. . ■
