ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS
PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION ' ■ ,
A meeting of the Wellington Accountant Students' Society was held last week, Mr. Ernest W. Hunt presiding. The president referred with regret to the death of the Hon. Sir Eobert Stout, for many years Chief Justice of the Dominion. The late Sir Bobert, he said, had taken a keen interest in the student movement, andiiad assisted by lecturing on more than one occasion. A voto of condolence with Lady Stout and family was passed.
The business of the evening was the annual public speaking competition, tho first portion of which was the reading of essays written by the candidates. The following members took part: Mr. H. L. Cooper, "Insurance against loss of profits following Are;" Mr. L. V. Phillips, '' Secret reserves, and ' the auditor's duty in relation thereto;" Mr. I. J. Mackersey, "Hire-purchase transactions and their correct treatment in tho books of account;" Mr. A. Young,"" Transfer and transmission of shares;" Mr. A. P. O'Shea, "A system of tramways store records;" Mr. D. K. Carey, "Verification of stock-in-trade." After reading their essays and answering questions, tho candidates were required to make an impromptu speech; tho subject dealing with company law in relation to payment of dividends. The adjudicator, Mr. 11. D. Vickery, P.P.A.N.Z., announced that the competition had been won by Mr. A. P. O'Shea, Mr. A. YovTng filling second place. Mr. Vickory complimented tho candidates on their performances, and gave some criticisms, which wero much appreciated. On tho motion of Mr. D. E. Carey, seconded by Mr. 11. L. Cooper, a htJarty voto of thanks was accorded to Mr. Vickery for his assistance.
