LOWER HUTT PROBLEM
About sixty men were registered as unemployed at Lower Hutt last week. Twenty of these are now in work, found for them by the Borough Engineer, Mr. A. O. Bush, who hopes to take on more shortly. Mr. Busli is finding considerable difficulty in selecting the most deserving cases. Ho commenced by giving preference to meu with the largest families, but finds the situation complicated by the fact that ratepayers are demanding preference over those who are merely residents in the district. Then, too, many of the men have up till recently been earning good wages at seasonal employment, so that the task of distinguishing the most deserving cases is a very, complicated one.
