CHESS

N.Z. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

AUCKLAND V. WELLINGTON

The result of the recently-played telegraphic match between tha above clubs is now available, the Dunedin membera of the New ■. Zealand Adjudication Board (Messrs. J. B. Dunlop, 0. Balk, and L. D. Coombs) having awarded a draw at board l<t-viz., A. E. Leyland & y. W. R. B. Jones %,* The local club thus wins an exciting match by one game (10% to' 9%), and scores a point in .the annual contest for the club championship of New Zealand. This result will -.intensify^ the interest in to-day's match .between the Otago and Wellington. Clubs, al bout- that year after year provides the satisfactory feature of a very close finish. The full score of the recent Auokland v. Wellington fixture is as follows:— . ;;. ,

From the above summary it will be seen that this fixture was. not made an annual one until after the Great War came to an end. The spectators at this end1 when the first match was played in 1891 included the late Hon. John Ballance (Prime Minister), and his intimate friend, the late Sir Robert Stout, who, as stated in our last week's notes, founded the first Dunedin Chess Club in 1865, when M.H.R. for Cayersham. The late Mr, Justice Denniston, a former president of the New Zealand Cbesse Association, who excelled in the end-game, was an'interested spectator at some of.the'later.contests. It is interesting to recall that of the fifteen mem-' hers who represented the Wellington Chesa Club in the -pioneer match 38 years' ago five have crossed the Great Divide, four have removed to 6ther centres,, four -are still residing in Greater Wellington but have dropped out of club chess, and two are still assisting the local club in its annual fixtures—vis., Messrs. W.. Mackay (president) and P. K. Kelling (senior vice-president). None of the Aucklanders who took part in the first contest are still "in harness." It may be added that three Wellington players -were penalised ■ for clerical errors in the- 1891 fixture. The statement that the .Auckland Chess Club (which was known as the Graf ton. Chess Club during its first year) only has a birthday once in four years is duo to the fact that it was founded on 29th February, 1884. '~•■•..■.■ ;.
