SECOND DIVISION

WIN FOR LOWER HUTT.

Although fielding a team weakened by absentees, Lower Hutt managed to score a win over Swifts by three goals to one. The game was played on the Lower Hutt Recreation Ground; but the standard ot football was not high.

The teams were:— ' ■ Lower Hutt—Bird; M'Dougall, Chapman; Barrett,- Laud, gtobbs; Nicolle, .Jessup, Brown, Macaiclle, Bachelor. Swifts.—Forbes; Hillock, Longbottom; Bloonifielcl.Davity, Smith; Kelly, Adams. O'Shea, Dickson, Bradford. Swifts had the advantage, ot tlie .xviail diiring the first spell. Play was rather of the kick-and-run type for a time, each side making excursions into enemy territory in turn. At one period the Hutt defence had a very trying spell, bad shooting on the part of the Swifts forwards being very conspicuous. Towards the end of the spell play livened up consider ably and Brown scored Hutt's first goal Swifts, however, retaliated, and Dickson made no mistake when he found an open goal in front of him.*1 Just before the whistle Swifts had the benefit-of n pen-' a'lty kick, but Bird saved well,,aud ends wore changed with the score one goal eacJi.

The second half of the game saw Lower Hutt do most of the attacking, although at times Swifts were aggressive. Hutt'a shooting, however, lacked sting, and Swifts lacked direction. After Hutt failed to take advantage of a penalty, Bachelor, who had come to the inside position, made amends by running right through and scoring, thus placing Hutt in the lead 2-1. Some'strenuous play followed, Huti attacking strongly. Bachelor, receiving from Jessup, added Hutt's third goal with a powerful shot in the corner and made the game safe for the home team. Swifts finished up with a dangerous rush which came to nothing. Hutt deserved their | win on the day'ii play, Swifts not playinp : up to the standard which at times they have achieved. Mr. J. W. Graham was referee.
