TRIAL MATCH
WELLINGTON 5, WAIRARAPA 0. A very fast and interesting match was provided by the Wellington Shield team and Wairarapa, played on No. 1 ground at Karori. The local team combined much better than Wairarapa, and had the better of the play throughout. Erratic Shooting, caused by too much hard hitting, lost Wairarapa several chances. The game opened at a smart pace,-and Wellington were quickly on the offensive. Play hovered about midfield for a while, until the Wairarapa forwards got possession and carried the ball into their opponents' territory. Spiers relieved, however, and sent the ball downfield, where Roberts received and very nearly scored. Play remained in the visitors' territory for some time, until a nice movement by the Wairarapa forwards evened up the situation.- It was not long before Wellington regained possession, and with a long shot on the right of the circle Simpson almost scored. Wellington was having the better of the play, and made repeated onslaughts on the Wairarapa goal. Play evened up a little, but a free kick awarded to Wellington enabled Phillpotts to get possession, and send to Robb, who had no difficulty in netting. Wellington continued to press, and a movement started by Robb, gave Rowse the opportunity of scoring. Wellington 2, Wairarapa 0. . Play fluctuated for a while, with Wellington having slightly the better of exchanges. A vigorous attack by Wellington was rewarded when Rowse accepted a pass from Phillpotts and scored his second goal. From the bully-off, the visitors gained possession, and carried the ball into Wellington's ground, where a rush by the forwards nearly resulted _in C. Banning scoring. Spiers, however, with a good shot relieved the situation, and play was once, more in the visitors' territory. The half-time whistle then sounded, and the score was* Wellington 3, Wairarapa 0. Both teams were on their mettle at the beginning of the second spell. Wellington pressed very hard, and on two or three occasions narrowly missed scoi"ing. Only good work by Smith, the Wairarapa goalie; saved the situation. Another vigorous attack by Wellington ended in a melee in front of the goal-mouth. Smith leaped in to check the movement, and got mixed up in . the scramble. G. Bannin jumped into his place, and with a brilliant shot cleared. Wellington was not long in returning the ball to the visitors' territory, and a scramble on the edge of the circle resulted in Roberts scoring with a brilliant angle shot. From the bullyoff, Wellington gained possession, and a rush upfield by the forwards resulted^ in Simpson netting. Wellington 5, Wairarapa 0. In the remainder of the game the visitors made a determined effort, but they were unable to withstand the vigorous attacks made by Wellington. The final whistle blew without further score. Mr. J. W. Russell and Mr. Ebbett were the referees.
