Ah interesting turn of events took place in the senior A grade Rugby competition on Saturday afternoon, when Eastbourne advanced to.within a point of Petone on the championship ladder. This was brought about by the defeat of Petone by Hutt and a win by Eastbourne over Marist. The games were played in ideal footballing weather, and the play generally was of splendid order; in fact, the series xr'aa. quite one of the best of the season. Hutt, who had some promoted players in their team, registered a fine performance against Petone at Athletic Park, a hustling pack and a nippy set of backs setting n, hard task for the championship leaders. The game, was keen, fast, and interesting, with Hutt looking like winners all the way. Apart from • others to show up prominently, Ball played another attractive game for Hutt, and on present form is certainly well worthy of consideration for ISfew Zealand honours. Hutt won by a margin of 14 points. The steady advance which Eastbourne has been making was maintained on. Saturday when the ability to'- press ■ home attacks accounted for a good win over Marist at Petone. The advantage territorially was with the town team, but Eastbourne's play was superior and speed was used to good effect. Eastbourne had II points to spare at the finish. Still another exhilarating game was that between University and Athletic at Wakeifieli Park, the students scoring their second win of. the season in a hard and fast contest. Play 'in the Poneke-Oriental match at Prince o£ Wales Park was also or an entertaining order, and it became very exciting when Oriental were wiping off: a big deficiency in the concluding stages. Forty-two points were scored in this game, and they were evenly distributed between the teams. Berhampore were a good match for Old Boys at Kilbirnie, and in this, another really good game, Old Boys won narrowly. The following are the championship points:—Petone 18, Eastbourne 17, Hutt 15, Old Boys 15, Marist 13, Poneke 12, Athletic 9, Berhampore 8, Oriental 8, University 5. Wellington added to their notable record in the senior B grade competition by a win over Miramar by 32 points to nil. Johnsonville also held their position in close attendance with championship leaders. The championship points are:—Wellington 22, Johnsonville 20, Miramar 15, Old Boys 14, Oriental 13, Selwyn 10, University 8, Training College 7, Melrose 4, Upper Hutt 4, Porirua 3.
