A CORNER IN SPORT

There have been corners in various commodities since Joseph in ancient Egypt made the first recorded corner in corn, and compelled his brothers to come petitioning him for supplies. But no one appears to have made a corner in sport, though some individuals are reported now to be making little attempts in that way. For the second Rugby Test match there was some speculation in reserved seat tickets, and indications are that there will be more for the j third and fourth Tests. The people !who are promoting or assisting this speculation are acting against their own interests. When the Rugby Union announced its scale of charges there were widespread protests, and such terms as "exploitation" were freely used. The Union subsequently reduced the charges slightly; now the football patrons are raising the charges much higher than the Union proposed. We do not see how the football authorities can stop this entirely. They may check it by limiting the number of reservations to be made by any person at one time, even though this may entail inconvenience ito some buyers who are not speculators. The more complete remedy, however, must be applied by the sporting public by refusing to buy tickets at enhanced prices. If they do not do this they have only themselves to blame if the Rugby Union in future says: "The tickets evidently have a high value and Rugby may as well reap the benefit instead of the speculators."
