AFFORESTATION

GROWING BETTEfi TREKS Afforestation aiid the preservation of I existing forests are matters of such : vast importance to Mew Zealand^ of I more importance than many people yet realise, that an authoritative publication on tree-growing ia bound to command a wide circle of readers. In " Afforestation in Southern Lands" (Wellington: Wbitcombc and Tombs, Ltd.) Mr. E. Maxwell has produced a complete text-book applicable to NewZealand, a .country pre-eminently suitable for timber-growing on a large scale. He writes from experience, haying cultivated trees for years with the love of a true naturalist, lie deals chiefly with the planting and cultivation of exotic trees, mostly with those introduced from California and Australia. European trees ho practically leaves alone, as they have been extensively dealt with in other books. Mr. Maxwell has much' valuable information to .impart about tree-planting and ' cultivation, information derived from practical experience, lie does not hesitate to criticise where he believes criticism to be justified, and some of the past mistakes made by the State forestry Department arc not allowed to pass unnoticed. To anyone interested in tree-planting, commercially or otherwise, " Afforestation''in Southern Lands" should prove to he a standard and all-sufficient text-book.- The whole make-up of the book deserves recognition, the photographic illustrations bej ing particularly well reproduced.
