"NOT DANGEROUS"
STATEMENT BY TUNNELLERS
,'■..' (By Telegraph.) '(Special to "The Evening Post.")
AUCKLAND, 20th June.
■ That a number of the tunnellers at Arapuni do not consider their work dangerous, have not ' complained, and say ihat those who have" caused them to cease working aTe mistaken, is shown by a letter they havo written to the '''New Zealand Herald." It reads, as follows: —
"AYe, the undersigned tunnellers at Arapun:. desire to protest against the action >f the person or persons unknown to us who ha'e taken it on themselves to complain to the Minister that the-tunne^ in which wo havo been working is unsafe. Through this action and tho Minister's subsequent instruction that our work be immediately stopped wo have been thrown out of employment, and the loss .to us ,in wages is very serious at the present time. We therefore desiro to make known fllo following facts in regard to the situation:- —
(1) Wo have never at any time-been asked to work in any place which could be considered unsafe, either by th^ en-giueor-in-chief or by tho general foreman.
(2) If at any timd timbering was considered necessary, in tunnels our instructions have been to proceed at once with timbering.
(3) Tunnelling is voluntary, and we pick our own parties. for this work.
(4) The tunnel in question in which we have been working is of such soundness that no timbering whatsoever was considergd necessary either by the men or by those in charge.
"In consideration of the above facts we, the undersigned, hereby desire to extend to our unknown but apparently mistaken 'benefactors' a definite invitation to come to Arapuni and examine carefully the tunnel in question, thus proving to the satisfaction of all parties tho truth of our contention. If our would-be benefactor is genuine in his desire for our welfare, surely he will immediately accept our offer and so put an end to-tho enforced idleness which we neither want nor can afford."
The letter is signed by D. Logan, H. Jones, S. Wilson, E. Yorkc, B. Allwood, A. Blanehard, and W. Eennison.
