COLD AND SHOWERY
WEEK-END WEATHER FORECAST
The disturbances mentioned in yesterday's report crossed, the Tasman Sea during the night, but fortunately for the Cook Strait area and the greater part of the South Island, the southern depression, coming in conjunction Vith the northern cyclone, did not have the effect it might have had. Yesterday was mainly fair and pleasant from the Wellington district southwards, but except on the East Coast- of the South Island unsettled conditions sot in during the night with scattered rain. Over the North Island, on the other hand, many heavy falls occurred during the night, and the northern and East Coast districts had stormy conditions and particularly heavy falls of rain. For instance, Tauranga reported 6.45 in, Pakihiroa 5.18 in (it was still raining at 9 a.m. to-day), Tildtiki 4.15 in, and Tairua, near Thamos, 4.56 in. Considerable flooding has taken place in the eastern districts. The winds, which yesterday were mainly northerly, are now from the west or in places south-west. Auckland experienced stotmy weather with heavy rain in the afternoon and night. Wellington had a fine day yesterday, but it became cloudy in the afternoon, and rain fell in the night, the total, however, being only three points. Christchurch reported having had a perfect day. Dunedin had fair although cloudy weather, and this morning it was overcast and calm there.
The forecast is for moderate to strong south-west to south winds, reaching gale force at times in the far north and south of Castlepoint. The weather is likely to be cbld, changeable, and showery, with some heavy falls at times on parts of the East Coast and hail in places. . Snow is also pi'obable on the high country. •
