AIR FORCE CANDIDATES
DISAPPOINTED OPTIMISTS
MINISTER'S WARNING
A warning is given by tho Minister of Defence (tho Hon. J. G. Cobbe) to young men. who entertain the idea of going to England to join the Royal Air Force. Mr. Cobbo has received a communication from the High Commisisoncr in London in which Sir Thomas Wilford says he is often approached by young men who have worked or paid their jassagc to England in the belief that they will secure positions in the Royal Air Force, and who, having failed to gain admission to tho Force, and possessing no' return ticket, find 'themselves stranded. Tho High Commissioner asked^that attention bo drawn to the rashness of men going Home with this object without having sufficient resources.
Mr. Cobbe said that owing to increased competition for short service commissions in the Royal Air Force, he would strongly advise New Zealand candidates not to travel to England with that object in view, unless they had sufficient funds both to maintain themselves in England for some months while awaiting entry, and to return to New Zealand in the event of failure to gain admission to the Royal Air Force. "No applications will bo entertained by the selection "board of tho Air Ministry," he said, "unless tho candidate has been recommended for entry by the Director of Air Services, General Headquarters, Defence, Wellington, to which applications must bo made in the first instance." .
