ATHLETIC OUTPLAYED

Weak at the scrum base and outplayed in the first spell of their mutch at Newtown Park, Athletic went down before Marist, who retained their leading position on the championship ladder with a win gained by 32 points to 0. Marist had what advantage there was in a wind almost across the field in the first spell, which freshened behind Athletic after the change-over. The Marist backs were often dangerous, and their forwards played up ■well, hooking the ball with great regularity and seeing good use made of it, the team scoring all its points in the first half, the second .spell, a tussle between the forwards, being of lower standard, and in Athletie's favour. The teams were: — ■ . Marist.—Cuming; G. Barry, M'Donald, Broderiek; Robins, Condon; Keegan: Joinder; King, Wynne, E. Barry, M'Hardy, Butler, '.Cummhigs, Peter*. Athletic—Heazlawood; Poullon, Butler, Snllings; Bingham, Dustin: Dunn; Howard; Adams, M'-Dougall, Boyd, Burnett, Ward, Berry, Eraser. Marist were three points up in live minutes, G. Barry cutting through an opening near the twenty-five line and Athletic being penalised for preventing him dropping the ball. Cuming sent over a good kick.. It was ten minutes later after repeated rushes that the Marist men scored again, the ball being kicked into Condon's hands from a scrum. A bad tackle by his marker let Robins through, and he ran his men nicely into position, M'Donald re-' ceiving and letting Broderick over at the corner; Cuming allowed for the wind, and his kick flew straight past the posts with-out-a. swerve. Marist worked in close again behind a long' kick by Cuming, and Robins received to dummy twice and send a. lob pass out to. Broderick, who dived over. Again the wind did not blow for Ctiming's shot. A sensational cut-in by M'Donald, who interceDted a pass between the opposing five-eighths followed, but his kick over Heazlewood's head did not lead to anything. Athletic -were working upfield with loose rushes, but could not break through the defence, though, they gave Marisfc~some anxious moments. The worst thing the Bluas could do was hook the ball for fumbling' by the backs almost invariably brought trouble. The Marist forwards then penned Athletic, in a corner and heeled the ball to Keegan. The half shot round the blind side, dummied, and scored just inside touch-in-goal.. Guming's kick was poor. The spell came with the score Marist 12, Athletic 0. The second spell saw the Athletic forwards playing1 up well, and a much lower standard of play by the winnings backs. Four times Heazlewood had a chance of penalty points, but each kick was against the wind, and he could not steer them straight. This spell, Athletic gave more than they received, and once Poulton made a determined run aud handed to Adam, who crossed the line, but was recalled for a forward pass. Play was often fast, but lacked any plan for long stretches. The final score was Marist 12, Athletic 0. Mr. J. Bennett refetreed. .
