NELSON DEFEAT MARLBOROUGH

BLENHEIM, 14th June. .In the presence-of a large crowd, and in beautiful weather, Nelson defeated-Marl-borough by 11 points to 8, in the first representative match of the season. The Nelson backs were the superior division, and it was this advantage which gave the visitors victory. Nelson fielded a heavier pack, but they were short of form, only playing up when hard put toil. The play of the Marlborough forwards was notable tor the consistent tight packing, ..which kept the ball away from the Nelson rearguard. Marlborough • achieved distinction by winning most of: the scrums. The first spell was fairly fast, with some spectacular passages. Slater opened Marlborough s account m thrilling fashion, bolting nearly the length of the iiekl for an unconverted try. Less than a. minute later, Max finished oft' a passing movement by. scoring an unconverted try for Nelson. J. Cameron then scored from a melee in frout of the posts, M'Lau«hlin converting, putting Marlborough five up. Before the spell ended Nelson equalised, Wells touching down after Newman had beaten the defence hollow. Newman converted. Play degenerated in the second spell to. a forward scramble, Nelson proving conquerors with a try by Street, which was unconverted. Eric: Snow was particularly prominent for Nelson'in-the line-outs.
