BOISTEROUS SOUTHERLY
WEATHER NOW MODERATING
The weather yesterday and last night was very cold and stormy in all parts of the Dominion. Most districts experienced showers, and some places, including Wellington, had hail. On high country snow fell. It was particularly stormy on the East Coast between East Cape and Akaroa. Some gusts of tho southerly wind reached hurricane force at East Cape. Although the wind had by this morning moderated considerably in most places, a southerly gale was still blowing at 9 a.m. at East Cape and at s a few other places on the East Coast and in some northern districts. All centres had wintry'weather of a similar typo yesterday. At Wellington 31 points of rain were recorded.
Over most of New Zealand barometers are rising owing to tlie approach of a very intense anti-eyclono from, the westward. This morning the barometer at Sydney was as high as 30.70 inches, a figuro approaching a record. There has been a slight fall in pressure, however, in the southern part of New Zealand owing to the approach of a lowpressure wave from the southern part of the Tasman Sea. Hence, in the; South Island, southerly winds have given place to westerlies or north-wes-terlies. The forecast is for a continuance of squally and changeable weather, with intermittent showers in most places and cold temperatures. Westerly to south-westerly winds will provail in the South Island, moderate to strong aoutherlies elsewhere still reaching sale £Qlae. *? pieces* Jl'.J.l^.r*" _
