The Prime Minister (the Hon. G. W. Forbes) left last night for Christchurch, on a visit to his electorate. Ho will return to Wellington on Tuesday ingTho Minister of Railways (the Hon. W. A. Veiteh) left this morning for Wanganui. He is expected back in Wellington on Thursday. Mr. E. D. Blundell, barrister, of Gray's Inn, London, has been admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand by his Honour Mr. Justice Reed, on the motion of Mr. Buxton. A pioneer, of the West Coast and a veteran of tho Maori War, Hr. Richard Hicks,,died at his residence, Hataitai, this week, aged 87 years. He was born at New Plymouth in 1843. His parents removed to Wanganui,- and when the Maori War broke out young Hicks joined the Kai Iwi Volunteer Cavalry Troop,. which did conspicuous defence service. In one engagement the horse of Trooper Hicks was Shot under Mm. After farming near Hawera, Mr. Hicks came to Wellington in 1888, and joined the staff of the City Council, of which he was a member for 36 years. The late Mr. Hieks is survived by a widow, one son (Mr. B. J. Hicks, of the Wellington City Council Electricity Department), and' one daughter (Miss Gladys Hicks).
The funeral of the late Mr. William Frederick Richards, an old AVellington resident, who died this week, took place yesterday. The interment was at Karori Cemetery, the service being conducted by the Rev. H. E. K. Fry, of St. Mark's Church. Mr. Richards came to Wellington in 18C3, and in his younger days was a member of the Midland Cricket Club and the Wellington Rowing Club, and in later years joined the Newtown Bowling Club. The late Mr. Richards leaves two daughters—Mrs. John Burns, of Wadestown, and Mrs. R. 11. Taylor, of Wellington South.
