A VERY NEAR THING

BUMPED OVER LEVEL CROSSING

The proposed Petono ramp and overbridge has a convert. He is the driver of a motor trade demonstration car, which he pulled up on the Petone side of the crossing when the bells commenced to ring. Two seconds afterwards, when ho recovered from a particularly violent earthquake shock sensation, ho found that a lorry which had been running behind him had collided with the back of his car, and had bumped it just far enough over the first set of rails to let a city-bound train roar past—with about five inches to spare. Another spectacular mishap occurred on tlie Day's Cay road recently. An almost brand new English cay was apparently stepping out quite nicely along the foreshore road, and continued to step when the driver took the wrong turn (the old bend) at Point Howard and shot over the embankment into the sea. No one was hurt, but the car took a lot of drying out when it was hoisted back to the road again.
