STOLEN BICYCLE
A YOUNG MAJST FINE!)
An echo of the recent case in which a yoimg woman was sentenced to three years' reformative detention for housebreaking was heard in the Magistrate's Court to-day,, when, David. Fahey, described as a "butcher, aged 22,>'admitted to. Mr. E:< Page, S.M., the^ theft- of a bicycle,. valued at • £13, i the ■-property" of J, P. Munro, of Ghristchurch. ■
Detective-Sergeant Tricklebank.:said that the accused stole the bicycle from a street in Christchurch. Parts were found in St. Albans, and when seen the accused was (riding the bicycle with other parts attached. After being interviewed by the police, the accused left for Wellington. He had been here for some months doing very little work. He had beenliving with a rough crowd, and . when arrested" was living with a girl 17. years •of age.
Appearing for the accused, Mr. J. Meltzer said that the accused came, from a very respectable family, members of which had responsible positions in Christchnrch. The accused had been living at th'e:,house where the girl, who had recently been.convicted of house-breaking, was living,, but the accused had been boarding there, as he knew the owner of the house, a boxer. Fahey.had been living-a quiet, moral life. He did .not smoke ; or drink, and was an athletic . young man, holding/ an Australasian professional cycling record. It : was untrue that he had_ been Hying with a .wenteen-year-old girl, as he had only been a boarder in the same house.
Fahey. was fined £10, in default one month's imprisonment. He was allowed a fortnight in which to find the money.
