A LIGHTNING FLASH

TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, 2Sth May. A vivid flash o£ lightning startled many luvereargill residents at about 11 o'clock this morning. An area adjacent to Mr. J. W. Smith's residence in Holloywood terrace, Gladstone, was extensively damaged. There was a high wireless aerial mast on the lawn in front of ' Mr. Smith's residence. The aerial wires were burnt up, and a mass of soft earth was scattered over a nearby concrete walk. The concrete paths were torn up in several places. An electric light bulb hanging over the tennis court was smashed, and seven windows were broken. The damage was not confined to the one property, similar wreckage occur-ring-in all of the houses in the near neighbourhood, ana even in one- or two residences on North road, souio hundreds of yards away, and all the telephones, and electric light systems were put out of commission.
