ANZAC DAY

SPIRIT OF OCCASION PASSING OP THE YEARS (By Telegraph.) i (Special to "The Evening Post.") DUNEDIN, This Day. The question of the observance of | Anzac Day was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Dunedin Eeturned I Soldiers' Association. Tho discussion was prompted by a statement made at a recent meeting of the Manufacturers' Association to the effect that it was becoming more like a holiday than anything else. Tho chairman (Mr. J. S. Skinner) said their own experience showed conclusively that the attendances at the Anzae Day services were increasing, and a spirit proper to the occasion was being displayed by the people generally Mr H. L. Paterson said he had no sympathy with- the man who, Bimply because ho was a manufacturer, thought that Anzae Day should be held on the nearest Sunday merely to save him a day's wages. Even if it became necessary to celebrate Anzae [Day on a Sunday he thought the. returned men would still observe the t proper day. As time passed, however, they would find it more and more necessary to celebrate Anzae Day on tho nearest Sunday. ..,.,. Mr. E. J. Anderson said it was tho duty of all returned soldiers' associations to see that Anzae Day was properly observed, arid he thought they should express gratification that the people of the Dominion, and especially the young people, were showing their respect more than ever. As to the statute, that was a matter for the people themselves to retain or to have an alteration effected by law. The president and Mr. Anderson were empowered to draw up a remit for the conference urging upon all associations the necessity for a proper observance of Anzae Day as a day of remembrance for tho fallen.
