CENTRAL GROUNDS NEEDED '

QUEEN CARNIVAL SCHEME RULES INTERPRETED'

Another round of the Wellington Basketball .Association's competitions was completed on Saturday in fine but cold weather. In the senior A' grade, fairly comfortable victories were registered in all but one' o£ the games, the contest between Kia Ora and Wellington East Old* Girls being very close. Kia Ora attacked immediately, and by fast, sure passing soon established, a lead of 5 goals to 1. Wellington East then settled down, their passing in all thirds deserving high praise. Their goal third was m good form, and the score at half-time was 11-9 in favour of Wellington East." Doth teams played a fast, open game, and the pace was kept up right till the call of time. N. Bell for Wellington East played her best game to date, her fielding work being till that could be desired. M. East scored well, and the combined work of these two was responsible for the greater number of points scored'by their team. Kia Oru, although, they played a fast game., often lost opportunities through fumbling, and through over-eagerness. The final scoreWellington East 20, and Kia Ora 17— was a fair indication of the respective merits of the teams. Miss Armstrong refereed. Training College had. no easy win over Awatea, • the field work in both teams being about the same grade. The slight superiority in the Training College goal third enabled them to score 13 goals against Awatea's 9. College players appeared to have niore confidence in their team work, and, although Awatea has good material, until better combination is gained", they will not be able to make the most of it. Training College is steadily improving, and each week is giving a better exhibition. Mrs. Donovan refereed. Another comfortable win was registered by Technical College Old Girls in their match against Gilby's, the combined work of the former team showing up well. Their showing was. all the more creditable because of the absence through illness of J. Buck, and J. Doile, two of their best players. Technical is unfortunate in losing these player-s, especially in their first year in senior A. The score was Technical 17, Gilby's ,5. Miss Armstrong was ia charge of the game. Y. Gym. commenced well in their mateli against the leading team (Wesley), the half-time score being Wesley S, V Gym.' 6. Superior training and team work soon gave Wesley a big lead in the second half. V Gym.'s form on Saturday was much better than that displayed a fortnight ago, and when this team settles down to its team work, still further improvement should be seen. The game resulted in a win for Wesley by 19 points, to 10. Mrs. Donovan refereed. QUEEN CARNIVAL. For some, years now basketball in Wellington has been handicapped by lack of playing area facilities. With- the rapid increase year by year in the number of participants in the game, the position is becomings more and more difficult, and with a view to alleviating the position the executive of the Wellington Basketball Association has decided to follow the example of other centres and endeavour to secure an area from the City ( Council which will be. used as central grounds on which all matches will be played. With this objective in view, it has been decided to hold a queen carnival to raise funds to assist in the preparation of the ground • should the council grant it. Already - preparations for tho carnival fire under way, and it is hoped that at least £250-:\vill be made available as the result o£ the effort. Coupons have been issued to the various teams, and the ten teams, selling the greatest1 number of these \vill have the privilege of nominating a queen. The ten.' teams must represent different clubs. The project has been taken up enthusiastically by tho girls, each team endeavouring to the best of its ability to secure the coveted: honour of nominating its queen. When the ten queens have been chosen, the,- procedure will be much the same as in tho ordiriaray course of a queen carnival, and every endavour will be made to raise as great a sum. as possible for the purpose already mentioned. Interest in .the carnival should not be confined to basketball players alone, but should also elicit the .general support of the public as a whole, in that its result will make available an area for recreation for girls whose claims in this direction are at least equal to those.of the opposite sex, which is indeed wall catered for at the present time. It is interesting to note that Christchurch has provided a basketball ground covering several acres in Hagley Park, while Dunedin, Invereai'gill, and Auckland have also been fortunate in. obtaining grounds. Those who are organising ■ the carnival here are certain that Wellington will not be behindhand, for in tins centre is the largest association in the Dominion, 128 teams playing in the competitions, with Canterbury next iv. sixe with S2 teams. REFEREES' MEETING. ■. \ The meeting of the lleferees' Association was held on Monday night. Mr. I*1. Elvincs presided, and there were present Mesdames Boyle, H. Muir, Misses M'Tigue (secretary), Madson, Wallis, Akel, Armstrong, Bayly, Messrs. Bryant,,Steel, Mol"lers, and Horniblow. Reports as to the state of the.grounds at Northland, Technical, and South Wellington were received, and it was decided to forward these on to the executive of the Wellington Basketball Association. Lengthy discussion on various rules and interpretations was of great help, and the following queries and answers sent by the New Zealand Eules Committee was appreciated:— "How should a game be re-started after a stoppage for an accident or other unforeseen circumstance?"— The game shall be recommenced by- the referee throwing up the ball between two opposing players at the spot where the ball was when play was stopped. (2) "When the ball thrown off at centre is missed by the side player and travels in to the shooting third and is caught by the player there, what is the penalty?"— The pass should be given to the opposing centre, and be taken as an ordinary guarded pass. . (3) "A ball thrown off at the centre goes out over the side line without being touched by a player other than the-centre who threw off. What is the penalty?"— Treat as an ordinary throw in—i.e.; the opposite side takes the throw in. Another matter discussed was the method ending a game. Under the new rules tho timekeeper indicates that time is up, and the referee stops the game immediately the ball becomes dead—i.e., a goal is scored, a tie-ball occurs, or the ball goes out of court. It was decided to recommend that the executive of the W.B.A. ask teams wearing navy gym. frocks to have a distinctive sash or belt, as the referees find it difficult to distinguish teams. i The'majority of those present signified their willingness to assist at the 3rd June tournament. . !
