A CONTINUED INCREASE

•An increase of 4.2 per cent, is revealed in the grpss tonnage of cargo handled at the Wellington wharves during the six months ended 31st March, 1930, as compared . with the corresponding period of 1928-29. The registered tonnage of trading vessels-which arrived at the port increased by 3.9 per cent. The gross tonnage of cargo worked rose from 942,628 tons to 982,141 tons. A striking feature of the statistics placed before the Harbour Board last night, however, was the drop shown in the handling of primary produce. Butter exports (ex shore and rail, and transhipped) increased from 11,933 tons to 12,946 tons, an increase of 8.5 per cent, over the 1928----29 period, but cheese exports declined from 28,607 tons to 25,648 tons, and frozen meat from 13,628 to 12,367 tons. Wool fell away by. 28.4 per cent., from 143,515 bales to 102,774 bales. Hemp showed a 5.5 per cent, increase. General cargo imports fell by 15,294 tons, while exports increased by 3907 tons. Timber imports decreased by 5.2 per cent., whila exports increased by 43.3 per cent. A total of 186,532 tons of bulk oil was handled, an increase of 26.7 per cent.
