UPKEEP OF ROADS

DEMANDS ON RATEPAYERS

"A SAD DISAPPOINTMENT"

"Keccntly the council supported a resolution favouring an increase in the tax on petrol," said Mr. E. Windley, chairman of the Makara County Council, in addressing, members at the annual meeting to-day. "While the purport of the proposal was a more equal distribution of the costs of ttie roads as between the property-owner and the road-user, there is sure to be opposition to any further increase. At the time I quoted figures showing the increase over a period of ~ years,, which proved conclusively that the. burden is fast approaching the breaking point. "The Main Highways Act was designed for the purpose of improving main traffic roads, and' also to steady up tho demand on ratepayers. The scheme has been a great success so far as the former is concerned;' as regards the latter, it has been a sad disappointment. Still there are some who view piling taxation on the land as nothing to be alarmed about."
