PROGRESS OF WORKS

Eoad works completed and in progress in the southern half'of the North Island are outlined in the following summary for April issued by the Main Highways Board:— . Wellington-Auckland, ria Taranaki. —Hutt County-Paremata to Horqkiwi Valley: The wooden bridge at 7M. 15.50 has been removed, and filling is completed. The concrete culvert at 6M. 76 is in progress. A second coat of bituminous sealing has been applied over a length of one mile. From Horokiwi Valley to Paekakariki 33 chains of fencing has been re-erected; 16 chains of widening has ;beeh completed, and 58J chains lias been prepared and has received a first coat of bituminous seall ing; 20 chains nas been prepared for sealing. From Levin to Wirokiuo bridge, preparation work from the 3 to CM. peg is proceeding, GO chains of widening; new i formation completed during .the month making 80 chains to date.

Levin to Pahnerston North, via Shannon. —Eorowhenna County: Levin to county boundary; at Tokomaru—On the reconstruction work south of Shannon the formation has been completed, and trimming up is proceeding; 100 chains of foundation metal has been completed to date.

Himatangi-AsWiurst, via Palmerston North.—Kairanga County, Rangiotu to e.ounty boundary; Bituminous "concrete paving on "Half Crown" to Eangiotu section is proceeding; 52 chains of base course and 50 chains of wearing course being completed. ', Greatford-Woodville, via Feilding and' Ashhurst.—Oroua County, Taonui to Manawatu Riv«r bridge: On the Tao-nui-Buunythorpe (section, the priming coat of the three»-coat sealing work has boieu completed for the full length, 130 chains being done during the month; 90 chains of the final coat has also bean completed. Prom Manawatu Eiver . bridge to the Gorge entrance, the thrjee-coat sealing work has been, conypletad, Wellington-Napier, via Wairarapa. — Taita Gorg.e to 'Silverstream bridge: The final bituminous seal coat oil this section has been completed. Between Akatarawa Junction and the Summit, Rinrutaka, 40. chaias has been resurfaced in preparation ftor sealing. One mile of bituminous seaEng was carried out during the month, and 10 chains of heavy widening wolck is in progress. Wellington-Napiar,. via Wairarapa.— j ilimutaka Summit to Featherston Borough boundary: Two bad corners have been widened. Bittuminous sealing has been carried out aver a length ,of 20 chains north of the Masterton Borough.' From Ruamahanga; bridge to /Falkner's bridge, 71 cliains <jf widening has been completed during .'the month, making a' total of 4 miles'l6 chains. Six concrete piles have bo»>n driven during the month for Galvin% bridge. Tho abutments of Waika^m bridge liave been completed, and 'the boxing for the girders placed. Junction , Tinui Boad to Weraiti j (Masterton County).—Metalling is boing carried out on: the newly-widened portions of the road between 5 and 6M. Mastertoh-Weboi', via Alfredton. — Widening between Alfredton and Heckler's Loan' Block, Road Junction is in progress, 2J milojs being completed to date. On the Sitmmit Hill section of the road from AJlfredton to Akitio County boundary, two miles has been reformed preparatory to metalling, and 46 chains of metajlling completed.
