MAKARA COUNTY CHAIRMAN

SUBDIVISIONS AM) ROADS

For the seventh year ia succession j Councillor E. Windley was elected chairman of the Makara County Council at the annual meeting to-daj'. There were also present: Councillors A. Bothamley, D. Prosser,' t, B. Bryant, A. J. Giddings, and J. Purchase. The chairman's address is reported under separate headings. Councillor Bothamley urged that the council should make its specifications for roads in subdivisions more stringent. Before many years were past, he said, there would be hundreds of houses at Tawa Flat, and it would be a tremenddus burden upon the ratepayers to have to pay for what they should have had when they ■ bought the sections. Such a state of affairs.did not exist in any other county. The chairman said that he had been | of opinion for a considerable time thatj the specifications were inadequate. He considered that the time had arrived when the question would have to be gone into thoroughly in order to overcome a great deal of tho.,', existing anomalies. , , Councillor Bothamley, in moving the re-election of Councillor Windley as chairman, said that ho had carried out his duties in a most impartial manner, which showed that he had the interests of the county as a whole at heaTt. Councillor Bothamley also congratulated tho chairman on his appointment as chairman of the Hutt Valley Electric! Power Board. The chairman thanked councillors for their continued support, and said that as far as the future was concerned, generally speaking the council could only carry on with the same policy as last year. >It was decided to meet on tho 'second Friday in each month.
