RUGBY RULES

AN AUSTRALIAN COMMENT

(Received 28th May, 9 a.in.)

SYDNEY, This Day.

The football editor of the "Sydney Morning Herald" declares that Mr. James Baxter's criticism of the New Zealand wing-forward was apparently not directed at individuals, but at a method which has developed into a cancerous growth on the game. ."His frank utterances will have unanimous support in every country except New Zealand. No cleaner and more chivalrous athletes can be found than Bellis and Porter, to mention but two fine wing-forwards of modern times. Their methods, however, transgress the laws of the game, and authority must take the blame for the persistence in illegal play after the sin has repeatedly been; revealed. New Zealand stands in infamous Imperial isolation in its defiance of the canons of a great game."
