AUSTRALIAN OIL PROSPECTS.

Opinions held in America regarding oil legislation in Australia are disclosed in a report sent to the Federal Minister for Home Affairs (Mr. Blakeley) by the geological adviser to the Commonwealth (Dr. Woolnough), who is visiting America. Dr. Woolnough states that all express the opinion that prospecting areas should be large, but not so large that it is impossible for them to be examined with reasonable thoroughness within a specified time. A total of 5000 acres is favoured by most, though 2500 was suggested as a minimum by some. There is universal satisfaction that the Crown retains mineral rights, and there is universal condemnation of any provision for a specified amount of drilling within a limited time.
