The Government had sought to punish •a, purchaser in a test case under the Volstead Act. '

Mr. Justice Sutherland, reading the Court's opinion, held emphatically that the Volstead Act imposed no criminal liability on tho purchaser of illegal liquor, and pointed out the significance of the fact that Congress had not acted to penalise liquor buyers specifically.
