MR; STRONG IN AUSTRALIA

The Director of Education (Mr. T. B. Strong) returned to Wellington to-day by tho Ulimaroa after a visit to Australia on educational matters. During his stay in the Commonwealth he attended a meeting of the directors of education from tho various States, 'which lasted from sth to 17th of May, ! and afterwards visited a number oil edu- ! cational institutions in New South Wales and Victoria to ascertain particularly how the thrc'o branches of education, primary, secondary, and technical, arc co-ordinated. He also, made inquiries into agricultural education; child welfare, and the education of mentally deficient children. Mr. Strong said that he could _ Jiofc comment on the results of his visit :ifc present, but would make a report in clue course- to the Minister. This report. would include recommendations for tho improvement of the educational system, in New Zealand. •

As the result of his investigations ho proposed to Call together as early as possible all the inspectors of schools, in order to place before them for discussion various matters arising,out of his visit.
