EARLY SETTLERS

ANNUAL MEETING

FINANCIAL POSITION

The annual mooting of the Early Settlers' and' Historical Association of Wellington was held last evening, Mr. E. G. Pilchcr 2'resiiling.

In the animal report regret was expressed that the gain of new members had not; overtaken the falling away of old members. Committee meetings were held regularly throughout the year, and were well attended. The incoming committee, it was stated, would bo required to pay early and urgent attention to finance, in view of the state of affairs of the association. The report mentioned with regret the deaths of Mosdames Henderson, Jamieson, S. Browifj H. Cook, C. D. Mackintosh, Sinclair, and Messrs. Blaekie, Hareourt, F. Hadfield, F. Thirkell, M. J. Kilgour, and C. W. Tanner. In commenting upon the year 's work, the chairman referred to the financial aspect of the association. It was seven years ago since, it was decided to purchase a hall as a memorial, he said. Only tbout £500 worth of debentures had been taken up, and it might not bo possible to get rid of the balance. It did not seem likely, with the diminishing membership and want of interest, that the association would be likely to get the balance subscribed. It would be seen that the association hold property and equipment to the value of £4900; had £100 cash, and £75 owing to it. Against that was a mortgage liability of £4000 with accrued interest, and debenture money of between £400 and £500. There was not much to come and go on for the next twelve months, and if the hall were not let it might bo necessary to dispose of the property. Mr. Pilchor said ho hoped that provision would bo made for an Early Settlers' annexe in the National Art Gallery. ,

Tbe treasurer stated that tho loss on the year's working was £4 14s, and tho loss in the hall account; amounted to £53. '

The report and balance-sheet wero adopted. . The election of officers resulted:— President, Professor BY P. Wilson; vicepresidents, Sir George .Hunter, Mesdames F. London, W.; M'Gowan, C. Carter; hon. treasurer, Mr. D. M'Kay; committee, Mrs. W. H. Elliott, Messrs. C. Tandy, Ai Cheesman, S. White, W. M'Gowan, W. Freeman, W. Toomath. ■ >
