UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
In a letter dated 23rd May -received by Mr. C. H. Chapman, M.P. for Wellington North, from the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. E. A. Ransom), the Minister states that a special return furnished by the Labour Department on sth May showed that up to that date 1700 men had been placed oh Government works from the Wellington Labour Bureau since tho-present Government assumed office. Since that date 148 additional men had been placed, including 30 sent to the WairaJrapa' last Friday. Arrangements had since been made for an additional 300 men from Wellington to be provided with Government employment, and definite arrangements had been made for 130 of them.to be placed this week. The remainder would bo sent forward as soon as works would be made up and camps erected.
