THE POLITICAL DRIFT

ARK THE ELECTORS 1 APATHETIC?

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —It is curious to, observe that the majority of electors, in several fundamental Vespects, appear to be growing decidedly tolerant or even apathetic concerning the political chaos that grows more perplexing as the days advance. The United Party can be compared to a motor-c,ar without a gear box—capable only of going down hill, or. being pushed along by a separate force, namely, the Labour Party. The statement by the Hon. Mr; Forbes that his appointment was a unanimous decision is not convincing, considering that in a party comprised mostly of Cabinet, there were three other aspirants for the leadership. The three that were nominated must have carried a certain amount of support that was directly opposed to the present leader. Surely this as a reasonable deduction, and proof that the decision of the caucus was in no sense of the word unanimous. It is an open secret that, most of the contentious matter at the caucus was an expression of opinion of the policy being pursued regarding land settlement, the portfolio of which has been held by the jicw leader since the United Party took office. One can readily understand the protracted causus. Eeasonable propaganda is a recognised integral part of a political organisation, but at the same time can be overdone and thus react upon those responsible. J fear that in our politics of to-day we have a tendency to drift out of sight of the landmarks of the old beliefs — I am, etc., 2-ith May.
