ALLEGED VIOLATION
LONDON MERCHANT CHARGED
NEW YORK, 24 th May
Mr. Edward Tatham, member of the London wine firm Justerine and Drookg Limited, has been released on 100,000, dollars bail by Federal Judgo Caffey; to-day, and pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to violate the Prohibition law.
Mr.; Tathani, who was arrested whoa about to depart for Toronto, has engaged the counsel of the firm of Coudert Brothers, attorneys here for tho British Government.
A secret indictment was handed down last. Wednesday against Mr. Tatham and Ms'firm.
The Assistant United States Attorney, Mr. Watts, informed the Press. that his office had been investigating a proposal circulated among prominent New York business men for smuggling liquor from England into the United States. ,
Dispatches from London state that a' representative of the firm expressed surprise at th'o indictment, and disclaimed any knowledge of the export of liquor to the 'United States. H» stated that Mr. Tatham had mado tho trip to the United States on business.
