AT ASHBURTON

BIG EVENT TO ARIKIWAI

SPBINT TO GREENAWAY

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")

ASHBURTON, 24th May.

. The Autumn Meeting of the Ashburton County Racing Club was held to-day. The weater was fine, though very cold. The conditions were much worse in Christchurch, where rain and sleet fell in the morning. This ' affected the attendance, which was not nearly so large as usual. Good fields provided some decent sport, but there was a big drop in the totalisator figures, the total being £9142 10s, for eight races, compared witli £52,198 last year, when the programme was restricted to seven laces. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. . Racing; opened with the Higlnvcight Handicap, for which Quinopal aud Troilus were scratched, . .leaving a field of nine. Audience was a strong favourite, with Semper Piiratus and Quarterdeck disputing second position. Master Garland got off badly. Royal Mint was smartest out, but Solgelo soon headed him, while at the end of a furlong Audience, /Oriflamb, and Revision were at the head of the others. There was no change in the order till the home turn was reached, when Semper Paratus made a forward move, which landed him close behind the leaders at the entrance to the straight. Solgele then retired. Audience, Royal Mint, and Oriflamb came on together, but Audience was always going well and she beat Royal Mint by a length, Oriflamb being a length away third. Semper Paratus, who failed to sustain his run, was three lengths further back. The winner was always travelling freely. She is an improving mare, who, is racing very consistently. Royal Mint will do better before. long. LONGBEACH HACK HANDICAP. 'J'lio eleven acceptors lined up for the Longbeach Hack Handicap.' Arrowmaid was a pronounced favourite, on account of a minor win on the' West Coast, while Puuchestown and Fair Money were the' only others seriously fancied. Fair Money

was. iii'st to show out, and when the field settled down he had Arrowmaid'uud Gat-vai-.v as his nearest attendants, f With I'uiiuhcstown leading the others. Tariff llicn moved up, and at the end of two furlongs he was several lengths in i'vont of Fair Money, while after another yap Garvary and Valuation were showing the way to Puncheatown. They ran like this to "the straight, where Tariff commenced to tiro, while Arrowmaid started to move up, having # lost her place early. Fair Money was 'in front a furlong from the post, but Punchestown wore him down and won by a neck. Flaxbird, who-came on strongly over the final furlong, was a length and a half away. Arrowmaid was another length further back, with Garvary and Tariff heading the others. Punchestown registered an attractive performance, and ho is liable to improve a lot yet. Fair Money ran a solid race, and just failed at the end. Valuation faded out badly in the straight. Tariif showed great speed but failed to stay. SELMA TROT. Brcntelly, Zane, and Vesta liny were Scratched for the Selma Trot, Handicap, leaving a. field of nineteen. Author Williiigs and 'Red Shadow disputed favouritism, the former having a slight .call. A number of horses failed to begin well, Desert Key. Shining Light, Devon Child, Great d'Oro, and Author Willings-. being among the sufferers. Red Shadow was well clear of Logaleen half a mile from home, with Aretliusa in third place, these three having a big bunch just behind them. Arethusa followed Red Shadow to the straight. The pair had a sharp tussle, but Arethusa had something in reserve, and she beat Red Shadow decisively by a neck. Lopaleen was three lengths away, while Gold worthy finished on strongly to cut Clapham out of fourth place, with Aquilin and Checkers close up. The first, secondhand fourth home are two-year-olds and candidates for the Sapling Stakes. The winner is a sister to Wrackler. She is small, but she is an attractive pacer, and she stas'S. Red Shadow paced a fine race all the way. Goldworthy was staying on in great'style after going off slowly, and hisv performance was high class. AUTUMN HANDICAP. The Autumn Handicap attracted the six acceptors. Arikiwai was a hot favouriet, carrying more than twice as much money as Slenrowau, who way slightly better favoured than Starshooter, while Solmuri was the outsider. Solmuri drew out at the start, followed by Starshooter and Glenrowau, the last-named pair being joined by Haze at the mile post, and three, furlongs further on Solmuri had Haze' as his nearest attendant, with Starshooter and Glenrowan not far away. Then Discourse made a forward wove, and he was just behind the leaders at the home turn. All this time Arikiwai was in the rear, and his rider did not make an effort till nearing the straight. Solmuri was beaten when the straight was reached, and a little further on Starshooter and Glenrowan joined Haze in the lead, while Discourse was dropping back and Arikiwai-was moving up. Arikiwai was in. second, place at the distance, just behind Starshooter, and these two had the finish to.themselves. Starshooter had a slight advantage till near the post, but Arikiwai: wore him down and won by a neck. Glenrowan was two lengths away third, just clear of Haze, with Discourse next and Solmuri last. Arikiwai outstayed the opposition, and he will bo all the better for the, race. Starshooter also registered a, sound performance, w.hich directed attention to his future prospects. TRIAL PLATE. Of 'twenty-six horses in the book for the Trial Plate, Airplane, Miss Tembaron/and Desert Song were scratched, and .as the safety number is eighteen, the race was run in divisions. Bay Queen was a little better backed than Minerval, while alter a long gap Winsome Hind and Bellmrd were the only others supported to any extent. Night Rental bolted before the start, arid had to be led back to the post by 'the clerk Of the course. The first division was got Off smartly. Bellbird and Night Rental led out from Minerval and ■Retrieve, but Miss Bradbury, ran through very fast, being out with a lead of several lengths from Bellbird and Night Rental after going a furlong. Miss Bradbury still was well clear when the straight was reached, and ■ she won by three lengths from Bellbird, who beat Night Rental by two lengths. Weather Raid came on with a strong late run to head Minerva! for fourth position. Miss Bradbury is % a Paper Money three-year-old, with a great burst of speed, and she is liable to improve. Night.Rental-will pay. her way later on, as slie. is a smart galloper. There was a straggling start in the second division, Winsome Hind being last away. Appeal and Craigavon. drew clear at tlie rise of the barrier, but at the end of a furlong Appeal had'-Arrogant and Bay Queen in close attendance, with Craigavon next. Craigavon got1 a run on the rails at the home turn and headed the leaders soon after the straight was reached. From this point the race was all over, Craigayou beating Appeal by two lengths. Swiftray, who came with a, late run, was three lengths away, just in front, of Painkiller and Bay .Queen, i .The winner is an Australian-bred two-year-old owned by F. D. Jones, who purchased him. in Sydney as a yearling. He looks like developing into a useful performer.; Bay Queen was well placed 'at the entrance to the straight, but failed to run on. EIFFELTON HACK HANDICAP. The eight acceptors lined up for the Eiffelton Hack Handicap. The Sapient-Audi-ence bracket was much better backed than Toawai, who carried twice as much money as Kentish' Lady, the third fancy. Sapient and Kentish Lady were smartest out, while Divinette, after being last away, moved up fast'once she got going. Kentish Lady was shoMfing the way at the end of two furlongs, with Colonel Quex in close attendance, while* Sapient and. Divinette were next. The leading pair were four lengths in front at the half-mile post, and still had a big advantage at the home turn, where Rapana took third place. The'field closed up at the entrance to the straight, Sapient, Audience, and Thnrso joining the front division.' Kentish Lady and Rapina -were done with a furlong from the post. Sapient appeared to have the race well in hand at this stage, but Thnrso and Audience iinished' ou strongly. Sapient had to be ridden hard in the final stages to beat Thurso by ■a'neck,.-with Audience another nock away. Colonel Quex was two lengths further back. Sapient has become more solid lately, and further improvement may be looked for. Toawai was never sighted. RAKAIA TROT. There was a field of twenty-five for the Bakaia Trot Handicap, Devon Child, Brentelly,, and Goldworthy being scratched. Harold Denver, who had ran into trouble in his earlier race, when driven by F.1 G. Holmes, was a hot favourite, with his owner in the sulky. He shot out smartly at the start, followed by Eiffelton Lass, Little Victor, Stowaway, and Logaleen. They raced like this for three furlongs, when Logaleen took third place, while a little further on Doric joined in. Sodium was making up ground at this stage, and he was with the leaders at the entrance to the straight. Harold Denver and Sodium then drew away together, and they had the finish to themselves, Sodium winning easily by two lengths.' Glenville, finishing strongly, was six lengths away, just in front of Great Abdallah, Doric, and the two-year-old Flying Cloud. The winner is a., three-year-old, in D. Withers's stable. He has a lot of speed, and he is capable o£ something better than he has shown. FAREWELL HANDICAP. The concluding event, the Farewell Handicap, attracted the seven acceptors. Greenaway and The Raider disputed favouritism '■' early, but heavy support tame later for First Raid, who wound up first fancy. Rascal was first out, but Arroirnnr, Subdivision, and First Raid soon ran past him. Subdivision was in charge at the end of . three furlongs, with Arrowmir, lurst Raid, and Grecuaway next. Subdivision and Arr6wmir were in trouble when the straight was reached, First Raid and Grcenaway being left in charge. They fought out an interesting finish, but Greenaway had a little in reserve, and won by a neck. The Raider, who was not prominent early, finished on better than the others, ; but he was three lengths away third, with Rascal fourth. Greenaway came into prominence when she won the Royal Stakes in January last, but in the interval she had not shown any form.
