AWAPUNI CANDIDATES

FOE AUCKLAND AND OTAKI

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "Tito Evening Post.")

PALMEKSTON N., This Day

As a result of the withdrawal of Mrs. A. M'Donald's candidates, Awapuni will have hut a small team at Ellcrslie next xnontt. v "Red Fuchsia has been out in the psddock 'since before the Wanganui Meeting, while Elicit is now on the inactive list. Birkbeck, while , far from; his old self, is, however, attending the tracks. Llyn Dv is being kept up to the collar, 'and he will no doubt fulfil his engagement in the Raukawa Cup at Otaki. On Saturday morning Llyn Dv (W. Shearman) beat Potoaform (C. JBroughton) at the end of six furlongs, which were run in lmin 24 3-ssec, but the former had the advantage o£ the inside running and carried a lighter weight. , J. P. Coyle will leave on" Thursday for Ellerslie with Mister Gamp and Pahu. Mister Gamp appears to be a vastly improved horse as the result of his Wanganui outing,- and he should make v bold bid to repeat his Inst year's victory. On Saturday morning Mister Gamp (!'. Rccrf) strode quietly over a round prior to picking up Robbie's Mistake just past.the mile post on the courge proper. They ran on terms thereafter right into the straight, where Mister Gamp drew away to com-

plete his task in Imin 55 2-ssee. itobbio s Mistake claims an engagement ju the Otaki Hack Handicap. Aurora Borcalis, who has been out on her owner's farm at Himatangi since prior to Wangamii, was brought into the local tracks on Saturday morning, and will continue her activities here pending her departure for Auckland. She was not asked, to do anything of a serious nature, being run along over a round at a steady pace. In all probability the majority ot the local horsemen will centre their attention in the Otaki fixture, and R. Reed, who micht well'have been expected-to go north, wifl attend the meeting nearer home. 1. Green, however, will bo at Kllcrslie, where he has been engaged for Seatown, Gold Money, and Air Laddie. Green enjoyed ,i great innings on the first-named pair last Four Aces (D. Heap), who is to compete in the hunters' events at .Ellerslie, was se^t over the battens the reverse way on Saturday in company with Poppy Day (K. Parker), and the pair gave quite a good display, although Poppy Day jumped rather big at the initial fence along the back. The latter will, however, contest the Maiden Flat at Otaki. Four Aces has recorded some excellent performances over the battens without actually winning, and he should race well in the north. Pahu (R. Reed), who will accompany Mister Gamp to Auckland, in company with Glehrossie (T. Green), jumped off at the seven-furlong post to run the last six furlongs in Imin 20 l-ssec, without being pressed. l A plain-looking customer, he races, better \than appearances would suggest. Glenrossie will .compete at Otaki, where he is nicely weighted in the Te Horo Handicap on the opening day. Three candidates for the open sprint at Otaki in Callanmore (K. Voitre), Moutoa [Treasury (J. Nicolson), and Keddar (R. ! Reed), were associated over five furlongs. In the run down the straight Callanmore gained a slight advantage over Moutoa Treasury to complete his task in Imin 8 4-ssee, Keddar being a length and a half back. In view of, the state of the going, it was a very fair effort. Later on, Dobbin (R. Reed) beat Patearoa (J. Pagan) over the same distance in Imin.. 9 4-ssec. Hunting Boy was restricted to strong pace work on the sand.

An attractive performance was recorded by the Colossus youngster in G. New's stable on Saturday morning when, with J. Nicolson in the saddle, he sprinted home from the two-fiirlong post with Merry Melody (W. Bronghton) in 25 1-5 see, there being practically nothing between them at the finish.

Moutoa's • Acre (J. Nicolson) and Braggart (K. Voitre), two Maiden Flat candidates at Otaki, are regular associates in their track gallops, and there is seldom little between them. ' On Saturday morning, however, Moutoa's Acre liad the best of matters in the run home to/cover the five/ furlongs in Imin 10 4-ssec, Braggart being a length and a half back after having had the inside running. Terra Pinna, (J. Nicolson), . Trojan Melody (W. Broughton), .and Merry Damon (R. Reed) went out to porform a half-mile gallop, but Merry Damon found the youngsters too speedy for him over a short course, and he was still well back at the post. Terra Firma, who is a great upstanding sort, got up in the last few strides to head off Trojan Melody, running the distance in the good time of Imin Osec. .In all probability Merry Damon will go through with his engagement at Otaki despite his 10.1, while the other pair will compete in the Maiden Flat. ' .

Lady Lackham (C. Broughton) had Fiery Comet (R.- Reed) as a partner over five furlongSj the former having the advantage after running Imin 10 3-ssec for the distance. Fiery Comet was operated on.some five weeks back, and he is now tubed. Coon Song (K. Voitre), who did not run up to expectations at Wanganui,'. jumped oft"; at the six-t'urlong post to run the last five, furlongs in lmiu 9 3-osee. He has undoubted .pace, but he fails to stay oru

, The "Masher was taken to Blenheim by A. Quinlivari, in company with Winlock, but it was the latter which, supplied the wherewithal to cover the expenses.of the trip. On his return home The Masher went- to A. Wright, who is now stationed at Feilding.

There was not a great deal'of jumping attempted on Saturday morning, . First Ruler (Hi Gordon) gave a vastly improved showing at Wanganui, but the indifferent fences'' at Otaki may give to some of the others a too great advantage on the flat, for'the chestnut mare is almost invariably toiling along in the. rear in the early stages of her races. She went well on Saturday.- Hymestrason (A. M'Donald). was sent a couple of rounds over the steeplechase fences, while Eveniug Hero (C.' itobinson) had his education as a jumper further advanced by a round over the small fences. *
